Spring 2015 - C3664689 - Session 1

Winter Blues

This is session 1 of our current course beginning on 5 January 2015.

Our aim is to eliminate the winter blues by researching to find information about all things bright and beautiful as we leave winter behind & look forward to spring.

Whilst going through our enrolments we held a discussion to determine our starting point on this course.

We discussed what we thought the winter blues are.

We agreed they are also defined in the following ways:
The doldrums - Feeling a bit down - Fed up, SAD (seasonal affective disorder),
Seasonal depression.

Michael suggested that in severe cases, the sufferer may need to see their doctor to discuss the effects of depression & to get help.

Winter months are:
November, December & January.

Causes:
Long winter months.
Cold. Bad weather.
Dark nights, dark mornings.
Being stuck indoors.

Ways to tackle:
- Light treatment- daylight - get wrapped up & go out walking/Jogging. Take an early holiday.
- Take up a winter sport.
- Have a party.
Find a reason to party & invite friends to lift your mood.
- Start gardening, indoor or outdoor. Some houseplants have air purifying qualities.
- Set a goal. Lose weight, gain weight or fitness. Start something new. A course, decorating, a hobby.
- Hibernate. Stay home, warm & comfy with a good book or film.
- Finally, recognise the symptoms of depression & get help from your doc if necessary.

What do we think?
What do we look forward to as spring approaches?
Birdsong?
First flowers?
First born spring animals?
Spring cleaning?
Lighter mornings?
Longer days?
